Buck joined the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department on March 9, 1993 at the young age of 56. Buck became friends with several members of the department through his employment as an Estate Manager on Kent Island and they convinced him to join the department and serve their community.
Buck had been the treasurer for the UCVFD for 20 years and during that time served on the organizations’ Board of Directors longer than any other member.
Besides his involvement with the UCVFD, he served as the Commander of the Kent Island American Legion and was a charter member of the Kent Island Elks Lodge.
He worked most of his life in the banking industry and served in the United States Air Force following high school. Besides ensuring that the fiscal affairs of the UCVFD have been completely in order, Buck went out of his way to take the newest of members to the department and mentor them on various issues and concerns.
Buck provided great leadership and guidance to the Board of Directors and has always given sound advice on matters that must be undertaken by the departments’ leadership. He was at the station every day to check on things, collect the mail, distribute important information and then off to the Post Office and Bank to address the duties and responsibilities of his position.
During the department’s 2014 annual banquet and installation of officers, Buck was recognized by the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners, the Maryland Senate and the Maryland House of Delegates for his service as the Treasurer of the UCVFD and was elected into the Kent and Queen Anne’s County Volunteer Fire, EMS and Rescue Association Hall of Fame. Commissioner Dave Olds, Phil Duminell, Jim Moran, Delegate Steve Arentz and Senator Steve Hershey all recognized Buck during the program.
For his dedication and service to the department, Buck was awarded the 2017 President’s Award for his commitment of 20 years of service as Treasurer of the Department this past January.
