Department Purchases New Snow Plow

Friday, August 19, 2011  The United Communities Volunteer Fire Department has recently equipped our existing utility truck with a snow plow for emergency responses in the winter. As I’m sure you are well aware our county is in financial dire straits and because of this they have changed their plowing policies leaving side streets unplowed for extended periods of time. This delays our response and in an emergency every second counts. This new plow is a combination V plow that would respond in front of the ambulance or fire apparatus clearing the way and saving precious time.

Our department is always looking for ways to improve our delivery of emergency services. While we were in the planning stages of this purchase our first hurdle to overcome was funding. We reached out to the leadership of the Kent Island American Legion Post 278 with whom we have shared a long and continuous partnership in service to others. They were gracious enough to donate $5,000.00 towards the purchase of the plow. The remainder of the funds came from a generous donation from the Dempsey family.

Cadets get CPR Training

8 of the UCVFD Cadets received their CPR certification as part of their drill last week. The cadets watched a video and preformed hands on training in order to pass. They were also taught how to identify if there was a problem with the AED located in their schools, and what to do if a problem occurs. AED training was also given, since they are located in many public facilities now, and early defibrillation is crucial in CPR.

Annual Bay Swim

Sunday, June 12, 2011  Paramedic 90 was on standby for the annual bay swim. We were assigned to triage DNF (do not finish) swimmers from boats as they were brought in to shore. In all 5 swimmers were assisted with various complaints of nausea, seasickness, or vomiting. Unfortunately, we also assisted with a cardiac arrest during the swim.

Boat 9 was also on scene, assisting other fire and rescue boats in the area to help locate and remove any swimmers who needed help during the swim.

UCVFD Awarded Grant

UCVFD was chosen by the Department of Homeland Security’s SAFER Program to receive $333,600 in federal grant money. This grant will be used for recruitment and retention for the department. There were only 600 grants nationwide, and it is the largest our department has ever received, it will provide funding for over 4 years. The leadership of our department plans to share the resources and finding of this grant with other departments with whom we interact with on a regular basis.

The funding will be used in a 10-point program of new initiatives for recruiting new members and retaining existing ones.
-Reimbursing each member up to $200 for justified expenses incurred for training
-An Overall Recruitment Marketing Plan will be created to compile a list of qualified applicants from across Queen Anne’s County. Names will be given to different departments in the area, and UCVFD will become more involved in community and school programs already in place
-A recruitment coordinator position will be created within the department
-Recognition events will be held to call attention to the commitments our members have made, and provide appropriate thanks
-Up to $500 a month will be spent for education, training, and recognition items for members of the Cadet Program
-In-station library will be established, to aid members in their educational requirements
-In-station computer lab will be set up, to create a computer-learning center for members
-Members will be sent to local state and regional training, and conferences to better their educational and skill levels
-Entry level physical exams will be given to all new applicants
-Provisions will be made to help cover the expense of firefighting gear during new candidate training
